SmartSwitch Botswana was established in 2006 with the exclusive right to deploy the Smartcards UEPS (Universal Electronic Payment System) based on the Net1 patented FTS (Funds Transfer System) into the Botswana market. The UEPS is an alternative payment system developed for the unbanked and under-banked populations of developing economies and is the first system of its kind that can enable the estimated 4 billion people worldwide, who generally have limited or no access to a bank account, to enter affordably into electronic transactions with each other, government agencies, employers, merchants and other financial service providers. The UEPS has been embraced and approved by the central banks of countries such as Namibia, Ghana and South Africa as an accredited national payment system.
